Sixteen sections.
One cutout.

Sixteen panels inside the island, plus everything it says at the edge without being opened at all. Every icon opens its full story — and the island up top is a live simulation, so hover it, press its buttons, plug the charger in.

Feel

Spotify, Apple Music, or a browser tab — the island shows whatever is sounding, takes the album's own colour, and controls it.

  • Any source — native apps and browser tabs alike
  • Full transport — play, skip, a seek bar, ±15 s jumps
  • Favourite a track without leaving the notch
  • Output device — see it's on the AirPods, not the speakers

While music plays, a field of ribbons moves across the island — drawn on the GPU, wearing the artwork's own colours, and following the actual sound rather than a loop pretending to.

  • The real mix — bass lifts the ribbons, the top end sharpens them, a beat pushes through the whole field
  • Four colours from the cover — every track looks like itself
  • Arrives from the edge and withdraws the same way on pause — nothing snaps on or off
  • Video gets none — a sound meter over a film is decoration

Open the Mirror tab and the camera shows you — hair, light, what's behind you — before the meeting does.

  • One hover away — no Photo Booth, no test call
  • Nothing is recorded — it is a preview; if you want a still, one button puts it on the shelf

Press a key on the top row and the level appears where you're already looking — not in a grey slab over your work.

  • Volume and brightness, each with its own scale
  • Replaces the system overlay — one indicator, not two
  • Ignores the ambient sensor — only what you pressed

A message arrives beside the notch — sender, app icon, the text — and tapping it opens the conversation it came from.

  • Tap to open the chat, not just the app
  • Can dismiss the system banner so nothing shows twice
  • Off by default — it's your call

The things macOS shouts about, said in passing — at the cutout instead of over your work.

  • Charging — the level, the moment you plug in
  • Low battery — one calm warning, in time to act
  • AirPods — left, right and case, each with its own level
  • Mic & camera dots, always honest — and the mic dot is a button: one click mutes you in every app at once

Drag a file toward the notch. It opens into seven targets, and each one clicks under your fingers as you cross it.

  • Shelf · Convert · ZIP · OCR · Print · Mail · AirDrop
  • What lights up is what runs — the highlighted zone wins
  • Haptic borders — felt on the trackpad, not just seen

Park a file at the notch now, drag it out where it's needed later — into Mail, Telegram, a folder, anywhere.

  • Survives restarts — the shelf is not a clipboard
  • Fresh results glow — a converted file announces itself
  • Plays audio — listen to a memo right on the shelf
  • Pick many, drag once — ⌘-click several files and pull them all out together

Drop a file on the notch and it comes back in the format you needed — converted on your Mac, never uploaded.

  • Images, documents, audio, video — the usual formats
  • Audio out of video — pull the soundtrack from a clip
  • All at once — a whole mixed drop in one click

A scanner on the network or on the desk appears in the island: pick it, scan, and the page lands on the shelf ready to drag out.

  • Apple's own scanning panel — every device it supports, this supports, with no driver of ours in between
  • Straight to the shelf — no Downloads detour
  • Print the other way — a file dropped on Print goes to the default printer

Take the shot from the island, mark it up right there, and drag the result wherever it's going.

  • Pen, arrows, boxes, circles — in the colour you pick
  • Crop with a proper tool, and an undo that undoes both the marks and the crop
  • Drag it out — straight into the chat or the doc

What's downloading right now, its progress — and when it lands, the file is right there to drag out of the island.

  • Live progress beside the notch
  • Grab it the moment it finishes — no Finder trip

Press record at the notch, say it, press stop — the memo lands on the shelf as a file, ready to keep or send.

  • Live level meter while you speak
  • Lands on the shelf — play it back right there
  • A file, not a lock-in — drag it anywhere

A history of copies at the notch, and one click puts any of them into the app you're in.

  • Click to paste into the active app, not just re-copy
  • Copied a picture? The words in it are read out and kept as text, marked as having come from an image
  • Stays on your Mac — nothing syncs anywhere

Type or paste on one side and read the answer on the other, as you type. The text goes to Google's public endpoint and nothing else goes with it — no account, no identifier, no other content. The only other network fallback is a public YouTube thumbnail when macOS omits it; both are documented in the Privacy Policy.

  • Live as you type — no button, no key to paste in
  • Reading pictures is local — OCR runs on your Mac through Apple's own text recognition, online or off
  • Never open the panel and no request is ever made

Today's events at the cutout — and ten minutes before a meeting, the island quietly says so itself.

  • Ten-minute heads-up, without a notification
  • Join links — a meeting with a link gets a button

Today's reminders from the system Reminders app, plus a capture line: type the thought, press Enter, get back to work.

  • Real Reminders — the same list as your iPhone
  • Quick capture — one line, one keystroke
  • Check things off from the island

Type a number, press Enter — the countdown lives at the notch, appearing just often enough, and fully for the last stretch.

  • Type-and-go — no dials to fight
  • Pomodoro — work and break cycles built in
  • Discreet — glances at you, doesn't stare

Every Apple Shortcut you own, runnable from the notch — and the ones you actually use pinned to the front.

  • All your shortcuts, straight from the system
  • Pin favourites — the daily ones stay in reach

The commands you keep retyping — saved as templates, launched into Terminal.app from the island.

  • Your templates — name them, edit them, keep them
  • Runs in Terminal.app — visible, honest, yours

Halves, quarters, centred — the active window snaps where you point, from a row of buttons at the notch.

  • Halves, quarters, centre — the layouts that matter
  • No extra app — one less utility to install

Every control is one gesture or one key away — nothing to find, nothing to open first.

  • Click the mic dot during a call — muted in every app at once; one more click and you're back. press and release ⌘⌥ (Command + Option) without another key to do the same from the keyboard. The confirmation stays compact
  • A small ⌘ + ⌥ reminder appears below the island each time the microphone starts. Choose Don’t show again to hide it; restore it in Settings → General → microphone shortcut. Accessibility access is required.
  • During a call, a compact microphone and source capsule stays beside the island when music or another activity is in front. ⌥ + click the island to switch activities. Muting with ⌘⌥ briefly brings the microphone status forward. Both the companion and switching reminder can be turned off in Settings.
  • Swipe sideways over the strip — next or previous track; ⌥ + swipe — volume, without touching the keys
  • ⌥ + click the island — switch what the strip is showing: music, the call, the timer
  • ⌘ + click screenshots or shelf files — pick several, drag them all out in one motion
  • ⌥Space — open and close from the keyboard
  • Drag a file toward the notch — seven targets fan out, each border felt on the trackpad

Sixteen sections, but not all at once. Modes are ready-made sets of tabs for the context you're in — or keep your own set, in your own order.

  • Three presets, one tap apart
  • Or fully custom — pick the tabs, arrange the order

The island's look and feel are settings, not opinions.

  • Themes and animation presets — calm to lively
  • Haptics — how much the trackpad talks back
  • Every display — notch or no notch, laptop or external
  • Hide from screen sharing — invisible on the call

Questions

Everything you might ask.

And if something here doesn't answer it, write to us — a real person reads every message, usually the one who wrote the code.

The idea
Does the Mac have a Dynamic Island?

No. macOS leaves the MacBook notch as a camera cutout. Islio turns that unused notch into a Dynamic Island: hover it and it opens, with music, files, clipboard, screenshots and timers, without leaving the window.

What is a Dynamic Island for Mac?

A live panel in the MacBook notch, the way the iPhone uses the cutout. Islio is that panel on macOS 15 and Apple silicon. One-time $9, no subscription.

Buying
Is there a trial?

Yes. Download Islio and choose Start 3-day free trial in the app. Every feature is yours to try for 72 hours. Downloading or opening Islio does not start the clock.

No payment card and no automatic charge. Internet is required at each launch during the trial. After 72 hours, features lock until you activate a licence. Your data stays saved.

One trial per Mac. Love it? A lifetime licence is $9 for three Macs.

How many Macs can I use it on?

Three, on one licence — a laptop, a desktop and one to spare. If you need more for a team, write to us and we'll sort out something sensible.

Privacy
What data does Islio collect?

The app does not upload clipboard history or shelf files to our servers. OCR and conversion run locally. Trial and licence checks send the identifiers needed to validate access; trial checks also send app and macOS versions. The app checks islio.app for updates and downloads a signed update when you choose. Translation sends the text you enter to Google, and a public video thumbnail may be fetched when artwork is missing. The website uses analytics. See the Privacy Policy for storage, requests and purchase data.

Does it need access to my browser?

It never controls your browser and never asks for permission to. Music reaches the island the same way it reaches Control Centre — through the system's own now-playing service.

One narrow exception, stated plainly: when a video plays in a browser and macOS omits its artwork, Islio reads the title and address of the active tab only — through the system's accessibility interface — to fetch that video's public thumbnail. It never reads page content, other tabs, form fields or passwords, and never while nothing is playing.

Using it
Which Macs does it work on?

Any Apple-silicon Mac running macOS 15 or newer. It is built for the notch, so a MacBook Pro or Air with a cutout is where it feels right.

On a Mac without a notch — an iMac or an external display — Islio still runs and draws its own island at the top of the screen.

Can it replace the system volume and brightness overlay?

Yes, and it is a switch you turn on — off by default. With it on, pressing a volume or brightness key shows the level at the notch and the macOS overlay stays away, so there is one indicator instead of two.

This one needs Accessibility, because intercepting those keys is the only way to stop the system drawing its own panel. Turn the switch off, or quit Islio, and the standard overlay comes straight back.

Something isn't working. What do I do?

Write to us and describe what happened — even roughly. Include your macOS version if you know it, and a screenshot if there is anything to see.

We answer every message, usually the same day. Bugs that break something get fixed and shipped in days, not quarters.

Can I ask for a feature?

Please do. A large part of what is on this page exists because somebody wrote in and asked for it.

We can't promise every idea gets built, but we read all of them and we always reply.

Will it slow my Mac down or drain the battery?

Islio is built to stay quiet in the background. Work pauses when there is nothing to show, and the moving strip is rendered without keeping the app busy all day.

Is it safe to install?

Yes. Islio is signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple, which means Apple has scanned it and confirmed it contains nothing malicious.

It opens with a normal double-click — no “unidentified developer” warnings, no right-click tricks, no disabling of security settings.

Someone sent me Islio in a messenger and it won’t open

Files saved by sandboxed apps — Teams, Telegram and some mail clients — can arrive with a macOS flag that blocks launching entirely, with an unhelpful “can’t open” message. The app itself is fine; the flag is about how the file travelled, not what it is.

The clean fix: download Islio from this site instead — a browser download opens normally, with the standard first-launch confirmation. If you’d rather keep the copy you have, paste this one line into Terminal and press Enter:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Islio.app

That removes the transport flag from a file whose signature macOS can — and does — still verify in full.

How do updates work?

From Islio 1.0.6, an update notice in the island takes you straight to Settings. Choose Download update, then Update and restart when you are ready. Islio checks the update’s signature before installation.

Your files, settings and license stay in place. A call, recording or file conversion postpones restart. Automatic checks can be switched off in Settings.

Coming from 1.0.5 or earlier? Download and install the new version once; future releases can be installed inside Islio.

How do I uninstall it?

Drag Islio from your Applications folder to the Trash. That's the whole procedure — it installs no background services, no kernel extensions and no login items you didn't ask for.

Still stuck? Just ask.

Whether it's a bug, a licence, an invoice or an idea — write to us and a person answers. Usually within a day, often within an hour.
